The avalanche danger today above 9,000' remains Moderate due to the unlikely potential of triggering a very large, hard slab avalanche. A weak layer of faceted snow deep in the snowpack is slowly becoming dormant however the potential to trigger this weak layer remains a risk. Probe for the weak layer and carefully evaluate steep, unsupported slopes. Triggering one of these weak spots is becoming more unlikely but doing so continues to carry very high consequences. Travel one at a time and choose your terrain carefully. At the lower elevations, avalanches are unlikely and would be smaller in size and limited to steep, isolated terrain features.

    Weak layers of sugary facets are now buried 3 to 8 feet below the snow’s surface. Large or multiple triggers, or crossing a thin spot in the slab may still release a very large and destructive avalanche. Although the chance of triggering an avalanche on this weak layer has become very unlikely, it is NOT impossible. Steep, unsupported slopes on northerly aspects are the most likely locations to find a trigger point. Slopes may feel stable but bear in mind the size of the slides that occurred during significant avalanche cycle on these weak layers ten days ago.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Another inversion tonight will drop valley temperatures to near zero. Tomorrow, temperatures will once again be in the twenties in the mountains. In the afternoon, a cold front will approach bringing with it some cooler temperatures, northwest winds approaching thirty miles per hour and the chance for some light snow showers. At this point, it looks as if we’ll get little more than a trace to an inch of snow each day through early Friday. The deep weak layer responsible for some really large avalanches during the last storm cycle continues to drop lower on the list of things that could kill you in the mountains. Meanwhile, crusty, refrozen surface snow on southerly aspects is gaining ground on the same list. All joking aside, the deep weak layer will remain a concern in the backcountry tomorrow. The spatial variability of the weak layer across the northerly aspects, above 9,000’ continues to provoke caution due to the consequence of triggering a large slab. While the buried layer appears dormant, the specter of a truly large avalanche still demands some degree of caution when choosing terrain and tactics for your intended outing. Convex rolls, thin spots in the overlying hard slab or multiple people or machines in a given spot on a slope are worth identifying and avoiding. Moderate danger will remain tomorrow above 9,000’ with low danger below that elevation.
