Avalanche Activity

Light snowfall to below 400 m. Slight increase in danger of dry avalanches.

In particular in the Prealps some new snow at low altitude. This snow is lying on the favourable surface of an old snowpack. The avalanche prone locations are rather rare but are barely recognisable, even to the trained eye. Weak layers in the old snowpack can be released in very isolated cases by winter sport participants. As a consequence of new snow and a sometimes moderate wind, small wind slabs will form. These are to be evaluated with care and prudence in particular in terrain where there is a danger of falling. Slight increase in danger of dry avalanches.

Snowpack Structure

In all regions only a small amount of snow is lying for the time of year. The snowpack will be generally stable. The new snow is lying on a crust in all aspects above approximately 2500 m. The old snowpack is faceted. Faceted weak layers exist in the old snowpack in particular on shady slopes. This applies in particular above approximately 2300 m.

Tendency

If more snow falls danger level 2 (moderate) may be reached in the course of the day. The conditions will bring about a rise in the danger of dry avalanches as the day progresses in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls.
