Avalanche Activity

NC for 5/1. Mild. Some instabilities on steep NW through N to E aspects above 900m. Cornices prone to collapse. Moderate hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: The snowpack will become wet throughout. Some instabilities will develop, particularly during the afternoon, in the deposits of windslab found on steep slopes and gullies above 900 metres on North-West through North to East aspects. At lower levels the already wet snowpack will continue to thaw and be generally stable. Any cornices will be prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: The freezing level will be around 1000 metres overnight before rising to well above the summits through the day. There will be some rain during the afternoon. Strengthening winds will be from the South. Observed Weather Influences: It was a cloudy but generally dry day. After rising to around 1300 metres overnight, the freezing level was around 1000 metres during the day. Light winds were from the West. ObservedSnowStability: The slight drop in temperature has helped to consolidate the snowpack. Although some areas of windslab exist on slopes and gullies on North-West through North to East aspects above 1000 metres it tends to be generally well bonded. Below 1000 metres the snowpack continues to thaw slowly. In both cases stability is generally good. The avalanche hazard is Low.
