Avalanche Activity

Fresh wind slabs above approximately 2300 m. Remotely triggered avalanches are possible.

As a consequence of a moderate wind from northwesterly directions, visible wind slabs formed since Monday, 5 December in all aspects, especially above approximately 2300 m. Wind slabs are to be found also areas not adjacent to ridgelines. As a consequence of the moderate northwesterly wind individual natural dry avalanches are possible as the day progresses, even medium-sized ones. Numerous weak layers exist in the snowpack especially on steep northeast, north and northwest facing slopes. Between approximately 2300 and 2700 m the likelihood of avalanches is quite high. Even single winter sport participants can release avalanches very easily, including medium-sized ones. Whumpfing sounds and the formation of shooting cracks when stepping on the snowpack and artificially triggered avalanches confirm the unfavourable bonding of the snowpack. Careful route selection and spacing between individuals are recommended.

Snowpack Structure

Below approximately 2200 m from a snow sport perspective, in most cases insufficient snow is lying. The new snow of the weekend is lying on surface hoar in some places above approximately 2300 m. Numerous weak layers exist deep in the snowpack on steep shady slopes. Adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. In the northwest and in the southwest below approximately 2500 m a little snow is lying on south facing slopes.

The avalanche danger will persist.
