Moderate avalanche danger will be encountered over a wide area.

The wind slabs of the last few days are in some cases still prone to triggering. These avalanche prone locations are to be found especially in gullies and bowls and adjacent to ridgelines in all aspects. The number and size of avalanche prone locations will increase with altitude. Additionally in some places avalanches can also be released in the old snowpack and reach medium size. Careful route selection is advisable.

As the day progresses gliding avalanches and moist snow slides are possible. This applies on east, south and west facing slopes below approximately 2600 m, and on north facing slopes below approximately 2000 m.

Snowpack The snowdrift accumulations which have been generated during the last few days are still prone to triggering in some places, particularly in the high alpine regions. In addition, a melt-freeze crust in the near-surface layers of the old snowpack has, in some places, generated a weak layer from which isolated avalanches were triggered during this last week. On west-facing, north-facing and east-facing slopes above approximately 2200 m more than anywhere else, there are weak layers evident more deeply embedded inside the snow cover. During the last few weeks, only very few avalanche triggerings were reported as having been triggered from these layers. In Grisons and in the southern part of the Valais more than anywhere else, however, avalanche triggerings from these layers are still possible in isolated cases. This is a threat particularly in places above approximately 2600 m where the snow on the ground is shallow. Snow depths in the Lower Valais and on the northern Alpine Ridge are slightly below-average to average. In the remaining regions of Switzerland the snow depths are extremely below-average for this juncture of the season, including in the high alpine regions. Observed weather review Sunday, 09.04.2023 Nighttime skies in the western and the southern regions were mostly clear on Saturday. In the eastern regions skies were still overcast in some places, accompanied by light precipitation. The snowfall level lay at 1200 to 1400 m. In the eastern regions it became increasingly sunny during the daytime hours on Sunday, after residual clouds dispersed. In the other regions of Switzerland it was predominantly sunny. Fresh snow From the beginning of this period of precipitation on Thursday night until Sunday morning, the following amounts of fresh fallen snow have been registered above 1800 m:

• Vaud Alps, northern part of Lower Valais, northern Grisons, northern Lower Engadine: 10 to 20 cm; in the high alpine zones of the Valais and Grisons as much as 30 cm from place to place;
• in the remaining regions of Switzerland, only a few centimetres; in the furthermost southern regions it remained dry.

Temperature At midday at 2000 m, between +2 °C in the western regions and -2 °C in the eastern regions. Wind Winds were blowing at light to moderate strength from northerly to northeasterly directions. Weather forecast through Monday, 10.04.2023 Nocturnal skies on Sunday night will be predominantly clear, only in the southern Ticino will skies be partly overcast. During the morning hours on Monday it will be predominantly sunny accompanied by high-altitude cloudbanks. During the afternoon the cloud cover will become more dense in the western regions. Fresh snow - Temperature At midday at 2000 m, between +4 °C in the western regions and +2 °C in the eastern regions. The zero-degree level is expected to ascend to approximately 2500 m. Wind Winds will be blowing at light to moderate strength from westerly to northwesterly directions. During the course of the day blowing at moderate strength from westerly to southwesterly directions. Outlook through Wednesday, 12.04.2023 Tuesday During the night on Monday in the northern regions, light precipitation is expected to set in. During the daytime hours on Tuesday in the northern regions, skies will be predominantly overcast, accompanied by intermittent light precipitation. The snowfall level will lie at 1800 to 2000 m. Above 2400 m in the northern regions, 5 to 10 cm of fresh snow is anticipated in the northern regions. In the southern regions it will be quite sunny on Tuesday, in the southern part of Valais partly sunny. The westerly winds in the northern regions will be blowing at moderate to strong velocity, in the other regions of Switzerland at light to moderate strength. During Monday night, as a consequence of rainfall, moist slides and gliding avalanches are possible. The danger of dry-snow avalanches can increase somewhat in northern regions from place to place. Wednesday On Wednesday in the northern and in the western regions, skies will be bright in some places as a result of foehn influence, in other places skies will be predominantly overcast. During the course of the day, precipitation is expected to set in from the northwest. The snowfall level will descend from 2000 m down to 1200 m. A strong westerly to southwesterly wind will be blowing. The danger of dry-snow avalanches will increase as a consequence of winds and fresh snowfall. Isolated wet-snow and gliding avalanches continue to be possible.
