Avalanche Activity

CM for 10.4 Through day new unstable windslab building, mainly on N-E aspects above 950m. Fragile cornices forming. Haz Moderate

Forecast Snow Stability: Through the day fresh unstable windslab will continue to be deposited in wind-sheltered areas, mainly on North to East aspects above 950 metres. North-West aspects will also be affected. Accumulations gaining depth will generally be fairly localised. Fragile cornices will build above these aspects. The old snowpack will remain generally stable and its surface mainly refrozen in the colder conditions. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Winds will be very strong South-South-Easterly during the evening, veering and easing overnight to be moderate to strong South-South-Westerly during the day and later Westerly. During most of the night the freezing level will be above all summits with rain at all levels, then before dawn the freezing level will drop to around 1000 metres and during the day frequent snow showers are expected above 900 metres. Observed Weather Influences: It was a dry day, with strong South-South-East winds. The freezing level rose above all summits during the morning. ObservedSnowStability: The patchy snowpack continues to slowly thaw, and is generally stable on all aspects and at all levels. Its surface softened during the day. Main accumulations of snow lie on North to East aspects above 850 metres, and in favoured snow-holding areas on high plateaux. The avalanche hazard is Low.
