In sintesi

At the mid and upper elevations, the general avalanche hazard will increase during the day. Pockets of persistent slab could be triggered by backcountry travels venturing into steep avalanche prone terrain. Very little snow exists at the lower elevations and avalanches are unlikely. With a shallow, early season snowpack, even small slides can be dangerous if they carry people into exposed rocky areas or terrain traps, or over cliffs. Evaluate the snow and terrain carefully and identify features of concern.

    Persistent slabs, which could build to two feet by the end of the day in some places, lie upon a firm crust formed in October. Surface hoar developed on this crust prior to being buried which created a persistent weak layer. As the day progresses, these slabs will become easier to trigger as dense new snow adds weight and temperatures warm. At the mid and upper elevations where the crust exists, backcountry travels could trigger these slides, possibly remotely, and natural activity is not out of the question.

Avalanche Discussion

Light, scattered snow showers will linger into Monday, but significantly decrease in intensity with one to three inches of new snow by tomorrow morning. Overnight lows in the mountains will be in the lows 20s before rising to near 30 during the day. Southwesterly ridgetop winds will range from 10 to 20 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE on Monday. Backcountry travelers venturing into steep avalanche terrain where the October crust is present (primarily upper elevation, northerly slopes) could trigger persistent slabs one to two feet in depth. In areas where the early November storm fell on bare ground (generally below 8,500 feet) the general avalanche hazard is LOW and avalanches are unlikely.
