Forecast Weather Influences: Overnight precipitation will fall as snow above 1000 metres initially but down to 700 metres by dawn with a mainly dry day to follow. Gale force South-Westerly winds will ease by dawn and veer to the North-West. The freezing level will drop slowly through the period to around 700 metres in the afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: Gale Force South-Westerly winds today. Snow on the higher summits with rain at lower elevations. The freezing level dropped to around 1100 metres this morning before rising to just above the summits in the afternoon. ObservedSnowStability: Localised areas of moderately bonded windslab are present mainly on North to East aspects above 1150 metres with features such as gully tops and corrie rims most affected. Fragile cornices were developing mainly above these aspects. Isolated wet snow instabilities are also persisting on steep slopes mainly on the same aspects. At lower elevations the snowpack is thawing and stability is good. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
