Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Rainfall and thaw conditions during the evening will increase the risk of cornice collapse. This will threaten moderately bonded slopes in wind sheltered locations on West through North to North-East aspects above 1000 metres. Later in the day, as the freezing level lowers, this snow will start to demonstrate good stability. Below this altitude, the snow will be wet but generally stable. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Light rain at all levels during the evening, followed by a dry night. Very light snowfall during the day above 950 metres. Strong West-South-Westerly winds. 2000 metre freezing level during the evening, lowering to 1000 metres by daylight. Observed Weather Influences: A mainly dry day with some light, intermittent precipitation during the afternoon, falling as sleet or wet snow only on the highest summits. Strong Westerly winds eased to moderate Southerlies. Freezing level around 1200 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Thaw conditions have become established to summit level. Recent accumulations are consolidating with the majority of snow becoming generally stable but with wet surface layers. Moderately bonded snow persists in deeper accumulations in wind sheltered locations on West through North to North-East aspects above 1000 metres. Cornice collapse presents the greatest hazard, having the potential to trigger the slopes on the above mentioned aspects. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
