Avalanche Activity

At intermediate and high altitudes a considerable avalanche danger will persist.

As a consequence of new snow and a moderate wind, mostly shallow wind slabs formed. Wind slabs can be released, even by a single winter sport participant. This applies in particular on steep slopes, as well as in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain also at intermediate altitudes. Avalanches can be released in deeper layers in particular on steep shady slopes. The avalanche prone locations are sometimes covered with new snow difficult to recognise. Meticulous route selection is required. Maintaining distances between individuals and one-at-a-time descents are recommended.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 15 to 20 cm of snow, and up to 30 cm in some localities, has fallen since Thursday. As a consequence of new snow and a sometimes moderate wind from westerly directions, further wind slabs formed in particular above the tree line. The new snow and wind slabs are lying on soft layers on wind-protected shady slopes. Intermediate and high altitudes: Isolated avalanche prone weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack in particular on very steep shady slopes.
