Eastside Region

LOW avalanche danger exists at all elevations.  Variable and challenging surface conditions remain our greatest hazard.  Identify features of concern, be prepared for hard and slick surfaces, and be on the lookout for isolated areas of unstable snow.

Some surface softening may occur today on solar aspects, particularly if the clouds break and sunny skies prevail. However, sizable loose wet avalanches will be unlikely. Concerns over surface warming will be primarily for unsupportable surfaces, rollerballs, and punchy trapdoor like snow. Monitor surface warming by taking your ski off and periodically checking boot penetration. If you find that you are sinking in up to the boot top, consider retreating to cooler more shaded aspects. Areas with the highest probability of excessive warming will be on steep slopes with direct sun (SE-S-SW), areas near rock outcroppings or cliff bands, and southerly facing couloirs where the effects of warming are amplified. 

Variable and challenging surface conditions are more likely to be front of mind today. Hard and slick surfaces are commonplace throughout the forecast area. Keep in mind that even an otherwise innocuous fall could lead to a “slide for life” situation. Be aware of your exposure to terrain hazards such as long steep slopes, cliff bands, tight rocky chokes, and trees. Slow it down and remain vigilant if you find yourself in steep or consequential terrain. Equipment like boot and/or ski crampons and an ice ax may be critical even at lower elevations or in protected areas you may not typically expect to need them.
