In sintesi

Strong winds over the last 24 hours have drifted recent snow accumulations into slabs at upper and some middle elevation terrain. Focus your attention to wind textured surfaces and look for signs of instability before engaging in steeper terrain. Clear skies and increasing temperatures will open the door for wet loose avalanches and possibly some cornice failures.

    Wedensday featured strong winds from various directions which continued to load up slopes on multiple aspects. Expect these slabs to be larger and more widespread as you climb above 6000 ft into the wind zone. While most of these slabs will likely feel more stubborn, they could pack a punch if they fail as a hard slab avalanche. Look for these slabs on the downwind sides of ridges and canyons, below cornices, and under cliff bands or on aprons below chutes. Pay attention to snow depth, textures, and stiffness as you change aspects. Teaking small test slopes or snowpack tests can provide valauble data points and can help you gauge slab reactivity. You found a wind slab if you notice, siff hollow-sounding snow or shooting cracks under your feet or skis.

    Clear skies and 5000 ft freezing levels will set the stage for wet loose avalanche activity on sunlit slopes. We don't expect these to be that widespread since surfaces are variable, but these wet avalanches should be on your mind in areas where you find several inches of sticky, warming surfaces. Similar to wind slabs, once the snow gets going it may travel a long ways on the underlying crust. Head for shadier or lower anled terrain once you notice rollerballs shedding.

Avalanche Discussion

Wednesday was a windy day around the Mt Hood zone. Backcountry observers reported blowing snow, stubborn-stiff wind slabs, and good travel above 6000 ft. These next days will feature more spring-like weather with freezing levels gradually increasing each day. With that, expect some ‘spring shed’ as temperatures warm up. Cornices may weaken, loose avalanches may start peeling off (even on more northerly aspects), and rock/rime may shed off the upper mountain.
