Moderate temperatures and limited precipitation have resulted in minimal changes to the snowpack over the past week. Anticipate encountering a shallow yet stable snowpack across the Cabinet and Selkirk mountains. Unsettled weather is approaching today, possibly bringing rain or snow, which could increase the chances of small Wet-Loose avalanches.

    The weather forecast is calling for rain today that will gradually move up the hill to above 6,000' as the day progresses. Although our snowpack is generally stable in structure, you can expect to see the surface of the snowpack loosen up with the warm air and rain. This will increase the chances of triggering small avalanches in steep terrain at lower altitudes. You can avoid this issue by riding in zones above 6,000' where the snowpack is also thicker. This will decrease your chances of triggering small avalanches and hitting obstacles buried in our shallow snowpack.

Avalanche Discussion

While the current snowpack is shallow, it remains sufficiently supportable. In its present state, it serves as a solid foundation, awaiting a storm to blanket it with a substantial layer of snow. The longer this snow persists in its current condition, the higher the likelihood of it breaking down and becoming less stable. The mild temperatures have acted as a preservative, buying us valuable time. However, a sudden cold snap could expedite the degradation of the snowpack.

As of now, the snowpack is shallow but supportable and stable. Weather conditions are expected to change today, with a mixed bag of rain and snow forecasted throughout the week. The possibility of Wet-Loose avalanches will increase with the presence of rain, especially at lower elevations. Exercise caution for potential point releases on steep road banks, and be alert to roller balls and pinwheeling snow, indicating a risk of Wet-Loose avalanches.

Continue to tread lightly in the backcountry. Hazards such as logs, rocks, and exposed creek beds may lurk just beneath the snow surface. We'd greatly appreciate an extra effort in your snow dances to encourage more snowfall! So far, they haven't proven effective. Have a wonderful day and think light!
