In sintesi

While unlikely, it is still possible to trigger an avalanche in steep rocky terrain above 7,000 feet and on a shady aspect (E, NE, N, NW).  Continue to use caution on all aspects for avalanches and for early season obstacles like rocks and logs which are a serious problem and would amplify avalanche trauma.

Shady and rocky aspects are the most likely places to find the weakest snow. Weak layers within the snowpack that formed in October and November are strong enough now that test results are showing no results.  The depth of the snowpack as well as these weak layers makes triggering them easier. We will continue to monitor these layers as the poor structure may show its face again this season.

Avalanche Discussion

Not much more snow in the next 24 hours, only 1-3 inches for the mountains. Tonight the winds ramp up into the teens out of the South up through tomorrow and may push enough snow around to create a shalow wind slab avalanche problem.

Check out recent observations, as well as other observations on our observation page. Thanks to those who submit observations it helps us paint a clearer picture.
