In sintesi

Dangerous avalanche conditions exist. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning through 5:00 PM tonight. The Wyoming Department of Transportation fired their GazExs on Teton Pass early this morning, and Twin Slides put six feet of debris onto the road. Large, destructive wind slabs are very likely to be triggered today, and natural activity is likely. Over five inches of snow water equivalent has been added to the snowpack since Wednesday. This load may be sufficient to see avalanche activity failing on buried layers of surface hoar and near surface facets that formed in January, which could increase slab depths by one to two feet. TRAVEL IN AVALANCHE TERRAIN IS NOT RECOMMENDED.

    Around a foot of new snow has fallen in the past 24 hours. Very strong southwesterly ridgetop winds at 30 to 40 miles per hour with gusts to 71 have formed wind slabs at all elevations. These slabs, which could reach depths of three feet at the mid and upper elevations, have formed on graupel and dense snow. Skiers and riders daring to enter avalanche terrain are very likely to trigger these slides. Natural activity is likely. At the lower elevations, slab depths are expected to be 6 to 18 inches.

Avalanche Discussion

Very strong winds are predicted through the night with accumulations of approximately three inches. On Wednesday, a break in precipitation is predicted with highs in the mountains to reach the mid twenties. The general avalanche hazard is to be Considerable on Wednesday. However if wind speeds and snowfall amounts continue to exceed predicted levels, the hazard will remain High. Slabs formed over the last week could fail on density changes to depths to three or possibly four feet in steep wind loaded terrain.
