In sintesi

Triggering a wind slab avalanche remains possible in the upper elevations. These could be anywhere from a foot deep or more depending on the degree of wind drifting that has occurred over the past week. Watch for areas of wind loading near ridgelines, on convex rolls, and in steep gullies.

    With only a few inches of snow over the past week above 2,000' (rain below) it is the winds that have kept the avalanche danger at MODERATE. North and east winds were seen in the Seward and Lost Lake region off and on for over a week that died off on Friday night. Unfortunately, the anemometer (wind sensor) at Lost Lake is broken and until we can it replaced we don't have specific numbers on how high the winds got. 

    That said, we did get a report of a skier who triggered a large wind slab avalanche on Mt. Alice. It was on a westerly facing slope at ~3,000'. The slab was 1-4' in depth and around 300' wide. The skier triggered the slab from below and was able to escape off the moving debris. Here is part of the skeir's description:

    I felt the ground get light and observed cracking around me. I pointed my skies down and lined them up to a flat spot near some rocks with the hope I might be able to grab something. The slide stopped as I reached the rocks.

    Big thanks to this skier for writing in so we have this information. It really helps reiterate that even though there isn't much new snow out there, the wind can still form slabs. We are uncertain, but this wind slab could be sitting on some weak snow that was formed in early February. We have seen this set up in other areas. 

    Continue to watch for wind loaded slopes and cross loaded gullies. Cracks that shoot out from you and stiffer snow over softer are also clues to finding a wind slab.
