Wet loose avalanches will become more likely in the afternoon. Generally safe conditions prevail for most of the day. Practice caution and choose shaded slopes to reduce your risk.

    Warm temperatures on sun-exposed slopes will soften a recently formed melt freeze crust at the surface. With light winds, sunny skies, and highs reaching the 40s, expect the likelihood of triggering a wet loose avalanche to increase in the afternoon. Rocky areas, couloirs, and areas with low snow cover are the most likely places to see wet loose avalanches today. Gloppy surface snow, rollerballs, and pinwheels are indicators that wet loose avalanches are becoming possible. Make the move to shady terrain for better surface conditions and lower avalanche hazard.

Avalanche Discussion

Our surface has now undergone multiple melt-freeze cycles following sunny skies, light winds, and above-freezing temperatures over the last 2 days. With each subsequent cycle, our surfaces settles out, and the ammunition for wet loose avalanches decreases. Generally, low avalanche danger exists across the forecast zone, but in the afternoon, it may become possible to trigger a wet loose avalanche. This will be more likely on southerly slopes, at low elevations, and in the southern half of the region. The likelihood again decreases as the surface begins to refreeze with the setting sun. 

With a calm weather forecast for the upcoming week, it is a great time to pursue bigger objectives with the right buffers in place. Start and end your day early. Assess extreme terrain for isolated instabilities. Keep in mind that a small avalanche in extreme terrain can have elevated consequences.
