The General Avalanche Hazard at the mid and upper elevations is CONSIDERABLE and will increase through the day. Yesterday, with a foot of new snow and strong winds, slides were triggered by skiers on north to east facing slopes. Similar or larger events are likely today with forecasted strong winds and heavy morning snowfall rates. Yesterday's sun break also developed a thin sun crust upon which new snow will be very sensitive to triggers on south facing slopes. The general avalanche hazard at low elevations will increase to MODERATE today. Natural slides occurred yesterday at low elevations on the Wilson Faces (east facing) and in the Snake River Canyon when the sun rapidly warmed those slopes. Warm low elevation temperatures and a chance of rain may cause natural slides and make them easier to trigger by travelers.
Avalanche Discussion
The snowfall is expected to continue to taper off this evening as this mornings system moves rapidly to the east and south. However intermittent snowfall will continue tonight and Thursday. Additional accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are possible. Temperatures are forecast to rise into the 20's on Thursday. West winds will slowly diminish and are expected to be 15 to 20 MPH. AVALANCHE HAZARD FOR THE TETON AND GREYS RIVER / SOUTHWEST TRAILS AREAS:The general avalanche hazard is expected to be considerable at the upper elevations (above 9,000 feet), moderate at the mid elevations (7,500 to 8,000) and low at the lower elevations (below 7,500 feet). Soft surface slabs formed by southwest winds exist and lie upon lighter density snow, areas of buried surface hoar, suncrust and windpacked snow. These slabs could be human triggered. AVALANCHE HAZARD FOR THE TOGWOTEE PASS / CONTINENTAL DIVIDE AREA The general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE. Soft shallow surface slabs exist and could be human triggered on steep wind loaded aspects. Backcountry users are advised to consult area specific forecasts issued every morning as new information may become available and unexpected weather can change conditions.
