SC 05.01.23 Wet snow instabilities developing during the morning. NW to NE aspects above 900m affected. Avalanche Hazard Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: Wet snow instabilities will develop during the morning at all levels. Stability will be at its poorest during the afternoon and evening. Areas most affected will be where deeper accumulations remain on steeper terrain, especially on North-West to North East aspects above 900 metres. Elsewhere, localised moderately bonded deposits will also be found in steep lee locations. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: It will be dry overnight before precipitation, falling initially as snow will become rain at all levels by the afternoon. Winds will be fresh North-Westerlies backing and increasing Strong Southerlies by the end of the forecast period. The freezing level will be around 1000 metres overnight rising to above the highest summits by mid morning. Observed Weather Influences: Early fog and cloud cleared during the morning to give some brief periods of visibility and sunshine. Winds were moderate North-Westerlies. The freezing level was around 1000 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Thaw conditions overnight have left the majority of the snowpack generally well bonded. Localised instabilities remain in the deeper accumulations on North-West to North East aspects above 900 metres. The snow on the lower elevations and aspects is patchy and soft. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
