In sintesi

New snow and strong winds will lead to fresh wind slab development near and above treeline today.   Monitor snow accumulations closely and expect the size and distribution of concerning wind deposits to increase as you gain elevation and get closer to the crest. 

This will be the final daily forecast of the 2023/24 season. Limited spring operations will continue as conditions and staff availability allow.     Modest snowfall overnight accompanied by strong to extreme southwest winds have likely led to fresh wind slab formation in leeward catchment zones near and above treeline.  While unstable wind slabs are most likely small in size, some larger, more concerning slabs may exist in areas that receive more substantial accumulations, namely, at higher elevations and areas closer to the Sierra crest. Be on the lookout for areas with fresh deposits of new cold snow, recent drifting and cornice growth, and uneven textured snow surfaces. These are all clues that indicate nearby wind deposits. Do your own localized assessments and be suspect of terrain features that encourage drifting, such as the leeward sides of ridgelines, alpine couloirs, gully features, and cross-loaded depressions.

Avalanche Discussion

Winter-like weather returned to the Eastern Sierra last night, bringing modest amounts of snow and increased winds. Snow showers will continue today before spring returns in full force on Monday.  Monitor snow accumulations closely today if you venture out, and be ready for more sizable wind deposits in areas with more substantial new snow.

Surface conditions should also be at the forefront of backcountry enthusiasts' minds. Dust on crust, and a variety of hard and slick surfaces should be expected. Specialized tools like boot and/or ski crampons and an ice ax may be necessary depending on where you wish to travel.
