In sintesi

Heavy snow today combined with high winds will create very dangerous avalanche conditions.  White out conditions and heavy-rapid loading exist at all elevations and aspects. It is recommended to stay out of avalanche terrain as human triggered avalanches are very likely.

    With >3" snow amounts per hour combined with 100 mph winds out of the South, wind slabs will be prevalent on all leeward slopes.  Wind will transport snow to leeward and crossloaded slopes with over 3-5x the amount of windward slopes. Creating unstable conditions where wind slabs form wind-affected slopes.  Cornice formation on ridges and more dense wind slabs in protected catch zones will be widespread.

    With snow totals reaching >3" an hour for the next 24 hours above 8000' elevation, totals will reach up to 80" of new snow above 10k'.  Soft storm slab avalanches will be very likely on all aspects and elevations not effected by wind.  We have left storm slab out of our upper elevation diagram only based on winds speeds and strength will effect all aspects Above Tree Line.

    The Persistent Weak Layer (PWL) in our snow pack still exists, but has become unreactive as of late. It has either avalanched, been covered up by 2 separate supportable high temperatur ice crusts above it, or is in isolated-very specific terrain patiently waiting for the right trigger to come along to cause a very large avalanche.  The rapid-large snow load that will cover our terrain in today's storm, will either make it show its face or put it to bed.

Avalanche Discussion

  • Our persistent weak layer still exists in the snow pack, but haven't seen new PWL avalanches in over a week.  Pit test still show it in place and to be stubborn reactivity. This current storm will be our testing storm to see if we get any reactivity from it with such a significant new snow load.  Our friends to the south, Eastern Avalanche Center are still seeing widespread, very reactive PWL avalanches at all elevations.  While our friends to the north, Sierra Avalanche Center hasn't seen the problem as much and has removed it from their problems list.
  • This storm is predicted to start cold and get progressively warmer with high winds at all elevations. This recipe will create a combination of wind slab and storm slab at most elevations and aspects and warmer temps later in the storm will create an upside down soft slab of heavy over light.
