LOW avalanche danger persists at all elevations. Daytime warming will lead to an increased risk of loose wet avalanching today as rising temperatures and the strong spring sun impact the area. Monitor for changing conditions, be on the lookout for rockfall due to daytime warming and be ready for rising hazards as the day progresses.

    Partly cloudy skies and increasing winds are likely to keep surface warming in check for the most part. However, some surface moistening and an increased risk of rockfall should be expected today.  Many solar aspects are already burnt out, sparsely covered, or well transitioned at this point. More problematic today may be easterly and northerly aspects that contain a more transitional snowpack, particularly near and below treeline, areas near rock outcroppings or cliff bands, and tight couloirs with solar inputs where the effects of warming are amplified.  Keep an eye out for early warning signs such as moist punchy surface snow, rollerballs & pinwheels, and increasing boot and ski penetration. These are clues that may foreshadow larger point-release avalanches. Be wary of your exposure to terrain hazards and be prepared to retreat to more shaded aspects and lower angle terrain if you notice that surface warming is reaching concerning levels.

Avalanche Discussion

Significant avalanche activity remains unlikely however it is always prudent to monitor for changing conditions and keep an eye out for isolated instabilities. In addition to the risk of surface warming today, thin coverage and variable surface conditions should remain top of mind. Factor in extra time to account for the potential of a difficult and arduous approach. Large areas of dry ground, melting lakes, and rising creeks are common throughout the range and may complicate access. Getting an early start is also prudent to limit your exposure to rising hazards and to maximize your potential for pleasant sliding conditions. Expect to use boot and or ski crampons and an ice ax while slopes are frozen on the ascent and be prepared to retreat before surface snow becomes unconsolidated and unstable.
