In sintesi

Strong SE winds have formed dense wind slabs up to 2' thick on leeward slopes. These slabs are resting on weak, faceted snow, making human-triggered avalanches likely and increasing the chance for large avalanches that could break into deeper weak layers. Natural avalanches are also likely, especially during periods of peak wind loading. Careful terrain choices are critical—avoid steep, wind-loaded slopes and areas below them. Conservative decision-making is essential today due to dangerous avalanche conditions.

 

THURSDAY OUTLOOK: Winds are forecast to taper Wednesday evening, and Thursday will likely mark a transition out of the loading event with improving weather. Despite this, recently formed slabs will remain sensitive, especially where they overlie weak, shallow snowpack. Expect triggering to still be possible on steeper slopes, and continue to favor lower-angle terrain and well-supported areas as the snowpack adjusts.

    Recent Avalanches:  Recent avalanches include widespread small wet loose activity observed in Falls Creek last Thursday on steep south-facing slopes, along with widespread dry loose avalanches on north-facing terrain. In addition, a small wet loose avalanche was noted on April 4 on The Ramp on a SE-facing aspect.

    Strong ridgetop winds continue to transport snow, maintaining and building wind slabs up to 2' thick in the alpine and mid-elevation terrain. These slabs are most widespread on leeward slopes, with the heaviest loading still expected in areas like the southern portions of the park.  Natural avalanches may occur during periods of active wind loading, and human-triggered avalanches remain likely. Wind slabs are most reactive where they sit on weak, faceted layers within the snowpack, increasing the potential for larger avalanches that could step down into deeper persistent weak layers. Pay attention to warning signs such as shooting cracks, ongoing wind loading, and hollow or punchy snow underfoot. Avoid steep leeward slopes and choose terrain conservatively in wind-affected areas.

    Several weak, faceted layers remain in the snowpack, including near-surface facets formed during recent cold, clear conditions, multiple mid-pack weak layers, and faceted snow near the ground. Although no avalanches have been observed on these layers since the March 19 wind event, they continue to be a concern—especially as new wind loading adds stress to an already weak snow structure.  If triggered, persistent slab avalanches could fail 1'–3' deep and result in large, destructive slides. The likelihood of triggering is higher in areas where recent wind has built a cohesive slab over these weak layers, particularly in alpine and mid-elevation terrain.  Cautious terrain selection and ongoing snowpack evaluation are essential. Avoid steep, wind-loaded slopes, and use extra caution around shallow areas connected to deeper, more heavily loaded terrain.
