In sintesi

Watch for wet avalanches and slides in the recent snow on steep slopes at all elevations. Rising temperatures after rain on many feet of recent snowfall will maintain dangerous avalanche conditions. Watch for recent avalanches, rollerballs, and snow that slides easily on small test slopes as signs to stick to slopes under 35 degrees.

    Temperatures will rise on Friday following this week's warm and wet storm. We don't expect enough of a freeze to resolve wet snow instability. If the snow is wet and unconsolidated, you could trigger an avalanche. Slides at upper elevations could be dangerously large. At lower elevations, these avalanches will be smaller and possibly more difficult to trigger.

    Watch the terrain above you. Cornices and blocks of snow could fall without warning. Try not to spend time below these slopes. Pick safer locations to stop and regroup, free of overhead hazards.

Avalanche Discussion

It’s been a very wet and wild week. The East North zone managed to withstand the warm temperatures for most of the storm, allowing snowpacks to grow substantially (+30-50 inches). However, weather stations suggest rain reached above 6800 ft on Wednesday night for multiple hours. Observers reported large natural avalanches near Washington Pass on Tuesday and near Hart's Pass, both on Tuesday and Thursday. 

Flooding, washouts, and landslides have affected many communities. We don’t know the full extent of the access issues. Numerous mudslides and debris piles currently block access to the Silverstar gate on Hwy 20 as well as Hart's Pass road. Expect difficult access and challenging travel at low elevations. 

With the warm start to the 25-26 winter season, we have less snowpack information than usual to start daily forecast operations. For zones and elevation bands with less snow than needed for avalanche hazard, we will issue a forecast with No Rating. Anticipated avalanche and weather conditions will still be updated daily. NWAC will issue an avalanche danger rating for a zone when enough snow to produce avalanches has accumulated at middle and upper elevations.
