Avalanche Activity

NC for 4.2: Cold, some snowfall. Isolated windslab on NE to SE aspects above 900m mainly around coire rims, gully tops. Low hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Isolated accumulations of windslab will develop on North-East to South-East aspects above 900 metres. Instabilities will develop where accumulations gain depth. Areas most affected will be steep wind sheltered terrain around the tops of gullies, and coire rims. The old snowpack will be firm and stable at all levels. The avalanche hazard will be Low.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Snow showers are expected throughout the forecast period on strong to gale force Westerly winds. These will be heaviest for a short spell during the night, before turning light and occasional through the daytime. The 800 metre freezing level will fall to 400 metres and remain at this altitude from the middle of the night onwards. Observed Weather Influences: Strong to gale force Westerly winds with occasional showers which fell as sleet on the highest summits. The freezing level was above the tops at midday, although it turned cooler later in the afternoon. ObservedSnowStability: The old snowpack surface is thawing at all altitudes and remains well bonded and stable throughout. The most widespread patches are above 1000 metres on North-West through North-East to South-East aspects on corrie back walls, ridge flanks and the plateau. The avalanche hazard is Low.
