New fallen snow - strong northerly winds in the high alpine regions
It will snow until Friday, with a snowfall level around 700 m during the day. 30-50 cm of New fallen snow is expected to fall in the mountains. At the same time, strong northerly winds are carrying New fallen snow and building up new snow layers on the southern sides.
New fallen snow and blowing snow are the main dangers. Danger is increased especially in sloping terrain and in ravines where the height of the New fallen snow is higher due to snow accumulations. In the mountains, bonded snow will not adhere well to the old snow base.
Conditions are challenging, with strong winds that may cause windfalls below the tree line. We advise against visiting the mountains!
On Thursday and Friday, 30-50 cm of snow is expected to fall in the mountains, which will be dry above about 1000 m and wetter at lower altitudes. The snowfall will be accompanied by strong northerly winds, which will blow the snow to the old snow base or the ground in many places above the snow line. In previous snowfalls, there may have been some local drifting of Graupel, which is a potentially dangerous Weak layer. In the old snow cover, the snow layers are mostly well connected.
Cloudy and foggy with snow showers, heaviest in the morning and afternoon. Strong northerly winds with gusts of 70-100 km/h. It will cool down significantly. By mid-day, the temperature at 1500 m will be around -4 °C. Combined with the low temperatures, the feeling of cold in the mountains will be pronounced!
