In sintesi

Continued warming temperatures with minimal to zero temperature recovery in the evenings since March 31 will continue to keep the upper snowpack wet and heavy without much help from night time temperatures.  Expect increased probability of triggering wet slides during peak daytime hours on the icecrust just below the surface.

It has been a few days since temperatures have reached the freezing level in most areas.  The current and expected weather looks to be sunny and 45 degrees with lows down to 31 in the night.  This does not help lock things up much.  With the added layer of wind transported dirt on the snow surface and temperatures staying warm, the upper snow is a bit on the soft side and is gaining weight.  Anywhere from a few inches to more than a foot deep is a solid ice crust that bridges any problems below, but currently it is the bed surface for wet snow slides that will be easy to trigger.

Avalanche Discussion

Yesterday on Roman Nose in the Selkirks we observed a mix of brown and white surface conditions with cool winds forming a thin ice crust on the snow surface with the upper few inches being a bit slushy and grabby.  The brown surface areas remained softer with out the crust due to the gathering of heat from the sun that would poke through on occasion.  We were able to initiate wet slides with ease on steep southerly aspects in the subalpine zones.  There is a bomber ice crust that we found a foot deep which is what we skied on after triggering the slide.  Temperatures did not recover overnight according to local snotel sites so expect the upper pack to continue to rot out.  This will be the case for upper and mid elevations.  In the lower elevations expect the snow to be mostly rotten where there is no icecrust below.
