Avalanche Activity

The snowpack is soaked right up to the highest peaks.

The avalanche risk is moderate above 1600 metres and low below. Wet snow is the problem. Gliding avalanches can occur on a few steep slopes with a smooth surface, such as meadow slopes or rock slabs. In addition, wet loose snow or slab avalanches can release themselves on extremely steep terrain or be triggered by individuals on very steep terrain. The avalanches reach medium size.

Snowpack Structure

In the highest summits and areas adjacent to the ridgeline, small snowdrift accumulations may occasionally be prone to triggering. Otherwise, the old snowpack is heavily soaked to wet right up to the high altitudes and consists mainly of snowmelt. Only on north-facing slopes at high altitudes can layers of faceted crystals still be present deep in the snowpack. There is hardly any snow on the north side below 1600 metres and on the entire south side.
