In sintesi

New snow from yesterday morning associated with high winds will keep avalanche conditions at elevated levels in the upper elevations.  Slabs can break in the new snow on steep exposed slopes. Recent avalanche activity on hard slabs prove that you can still trigger un-survivable avalanches that fail on weak layers 2 to 4 feet deep. In tree and topographically sheltered terrain, you may trigger large loose sluffs. Stay in sheltered terrain that is below 35 degrees and unaffected by the winds from yesterday.

    Yesterdays storm produced some hefty windslabs.  In the Selkirks above 6000' we were getting strong winds out of the West with significant windloading averaging about 2 feet in the Eastern aspects.  On and near the ridgelines we observed some cracking on the windslabs with less windslab as you move into leeward and sheltered terrain.  Look for the red flags and observe the snow surface conditions as you navigate, primarily avoiding the steep and open terrain on windloaded aspects.

    In the Selkirks we picked up about 7 inches in the last 24 hours and 10 in the Cabinet range.  The new snow sits on some more dense snow from earlier in the week with a thin ice crust that formed at the tail end of Monday's storm.  It is hardly noticeable in the Selkirks and other observers said it was more noticeable in the Cabinets.  Keep in mind that if you are on steep enough slopes the new storm snow could slide as it is still adjusting.

    As time goes on and our small storms stack up on our persistent weak layers below, the persistent weak layers become harder to get results on.  More weight and consolidated snow has helped heal the pack.  However the surface hoar can still be found 2-4 feet deep and deeper in some areas with significant wind transport.  It is very prominent on all aspects in both ranges.  The results on this layer become less and less as time goes on.  I did not get any results on my tests yesterday on this layer but I am told that areas in the Northern portion of the Cabinets one can still get some whumphing.  I found the surface hoar very easily just above the ice crust about 2 feet down.  In addition there is still some weaker faceted snow below Mondays storm that formed during last weeks cold snap.  It was not very reactive but note it is still there and healing.  It is important to just keep doing small pits and slope tests, sharing observations and communicating results as you navigate. 

Avalanche Discussion

Yesterday we observed stiff winds with significant snow accumulations primarily in the morning with up to 2 inches per hour until about mid day.  Tuesday our avalanche conditions were rated HIGH due to the warmer storm that came in.  Since then it has cooled and we have picked up more snow that is lighter.  The weeks snow is right side up and surface conditions were great.  The weak layers below are getting deeper with less reactivity but in tact none the less.  With careful terrain selection and hazard mitigation there is alot of good play to be had.  We typically don't have weak layers that persist for as long as they have in our forecast area, but this year is different.  Respect the conditions and be patient and stick to the slope angles less than 35 and save the big stuff for later.  There is plenty of great sheltered steep enough terrain to play on.  There is alot of winter left so enjoy and play it safe.
