Avalanche Activity

Moist and wet avalanches are the main danger.

Up to 2600 m rain fell yesterday. In the early morning the weather will be cloudy. Up to 2500 m rain will fall from midday in some localities. The backcountry touring conditions are unfavourable. The weather conditions gave rise to moistening of the snowpack in all aspects in all altitude zones. As the penetration by moisture increases natural moist avalanches are possible at any time, but they can reach medium size in isolated cases. This applies especially on steep slopes at high altitude, and on very steep west, north and east facing slopes at low and intermediate altitudes.

Snowpack Structure

Above approximately 2500 m: As a consequence of mild temperatures the snowpack consolidated during the last few days. The surface of the snowpack cooled hardly at all during the overcast night and will soften quickly. Below approximately 2500 m: The rain gave rise to extreme moistening of the snowpack over a wide area. In addition, only a little snow is lying on south facing slopes.
