In sintesi

The avalanche danger will increase throughout the day and triggering avalanches will be likely in new storm snow and wind drifted snow. Avalanches have the potential to be large and can be triggered on slopes where the wind has not stripped the new snow away. Use terrain choice to your advantage and stick to slopes less than 30 degrees steep to minimize your exposure to avalanches.

    The southwest wind will begin moving snow as soon as it hits the ground. Wind slabs will build during the day; wind slabs can be many times deeper than the snow that fell out of the sky. Below ridges and highpoints are places where wind blown snow often accumulates. Slabs can also form as wind moves across a slope and fills in depressions and gully features. Wind slabs can be tricky to judge because some lee features will have minimal wind loading while other features seem to collect a lot more blowing snow. On west, north, and east facing slopes wind slabs may build on a base of weak/sugary faceted snow. In this case, avalanches will propagate wider and run farther than usual.

    This problem will have timing involved. In the early morning hours new snow accumulation will be minimal and storm slab activity will result in small avalanches. As the day progress and new stacks up to 10" or more, storm slab avalanches will start to pack a punch. Steep, convex, and unsupported features are the places where you are more likely to trigger a storm slab avalanche. 

    Weak faceted surface snow has been observed on west, north and east facing slopes in recent days. Storm slabs building on this weak sugary snow will be more easily triggered and have the ability to propagate wider and run farther than typical storm slab activity. 

     

     

Avalanche Discussion

Low elevation areas under 5500' elevation may get rain during part of the day. If heavy rain causes the snow surface to become wet and slushy, wet snow avalanches will become possible. If you must be out in the rain, stick to low angle terrain and out from under steep slopes. 

As the avalanche danger rises, be cautious with your terrain choice. Triggering an avalanche above or around terrain traps such as trees, rocks, cliffs, or constricted terrain can greatly increase the consequence of getting caught in a slide.
