Any snow available for transport may continue to create unstable wind slabs in specific terrain features throughout the region. Variable surface conditions may make mountain travel more difficult than usual. Localized assessments of conditions are necessary to minimize exposure today.

    Strong winds will continue to deposit snow into leeward terrain features wherever there is still snow available for transport. Unstable wind slabs have and may continue to form on a variety of surface types, which will affect their size and sensitivity. Localized assessment of snow surfaces and what is just beneath the snow surface will be important to understand where this problem lies. Protected areas that have held soft snow, and areas with re-faceting surfaces are where this problem is most likely to be reactive. Look for blowing snow and cornice formation as signs of active loading. Hollow, stiff, textured snow in start zones, gullies, and bowls can alert you to the problem today. Keep in mind - a small wind slab avalanche in extreme terrain can have extreme consequences.

Avalanche Discussion

The wind event from March 2 - March 5 has created variable snow surfaces throughout our region. Some areas hold soft snow, and some areas are re-faceting which is improving conditions for skiing and riding. Many areas are wind scoured or hold impenetrable wind board. Crusts and icy surfaces exist. We have also gotten reports of sticky wet snow surfaces at lower elevations during the warmest hours of the day. Localized assessment of avalanche conditions is important, as is assessment of travel conditions. 

Mountaineering equipment including crampons and an ice axe may help manage the risk of a long sliding fall on firm, icy surfaces.

The northern reaches of our zone may see increased winds and possibly some snow accumulation this week, while the southern region will see increased winds, but also increasing temperatures and sunshine in the coming days. Variation in conditions between drainages in the north and south of the zone may be substantial by midweek.
