In sintesi

So far, with all the warm weather, there has been no significant change in the avalanche conditions.

As things continue to warm through the day today, the avalanche danger will rise to MODERATE above 9500' on slopes that face northwest, north, northeast and east.

If you find yourself punching deep into slushy, sloppy snow, the snowpack is becoming unstable, and you should avoid being on or below steep slopes.

    Your primary concern today is the possibility of wet avalanche activity. The most dangerous situation resides on very steep upper elevation slopes that face northwest, north, northeast, and east. Dry faceted snow that formed in January may become damp and unstable in these locations. Natural avalanches are possible. The best strategy is to recreate early in the day and then start avoiding steep slopes as the snow gets wet, sloppy, and unconsolidated.

Due to the lack of snow and very quick melt off, I am discontinuing avalanche forecasts for the Skyline on Sunday, March 22.

Recent Activity

As of midday Friday, there have been no avalanches that I'm aware of due to the excessive heat.

Snow and Weather

General Conditions: Overall snow depths are taking a nose dive due to the excessively warm weather. Temperatures were well into the 60s in the high country on Saturday and only cooled into the 40s overnight. The snowpack may be somewhat supportable this morning but that won't last long.

Mountain Weather: Today will be another day with very warm temperatures again reaching well into the 60s. It looks like it's going to get breezy this afternoon. Warm weather continues through next week. Weather models continue to hint at a storm around April 1st.
