Today it is possible to trigger small slab avalanches at the highest elevations in steep terrain that has been affected by wind in the West and East Cabinets. Wind affected snow that has potential to fail will be more cohesive and prone to cracking under skis or snow machine. These instabilities can be easily avoided by choosing terrain that is lower than 30 degrees in steepness or sheltered by timber.

    Three to seven inches of new snow fell overnight in the West and East Cabinets accompanied by winds that have been light to moderate out of the southwest and northwest. At the highest peaks above tree line this new snow will be more cohesive and loaded into small pockets below ridgeline and in steep gullies. If you choose to ride in steep terrain today, take time to assess the snowpack stability above the most recent crust layer to see how the new snow is bonding. Shooting cracks and snow that is dense and cohesive are signs that a slab is present at your location. These instabilities in the snowpack surface are likely to be fairly small and unlikely to bury you, but the potential consequences of taking a ride in steep terrain should be in the forefront of your mind.

Avalanche Discussion

The riding conditions out there are about as good as we have seen so far this season, for what that's worth! Although the conditions remain thin and access continues to be a challenge in many locations, there is decent snow quality to be found. If you take a quick look at the photo below you can see we are well below normal, but sitting much better than other areas in the state.

The snowpack surface consists of 6-12" of softer snow resting on top of a very firm and supportive crust layer that developed during the warm and rainy spell of late January. This crust layer varies in thickness across the area from 2" to 6" and it appears to be getting thicker has time goes on and the saturated snowpack continues to set up and freeze. This crust layer is currently bridging over all the deeper weak layers in the snowpack that were creating the potential to produce avalanches this season. So right now, you could very well say that our snowpack is very stable. The part of our snowpack that you need to pay attention to is the upper layer above this crust. In most locations we have found the upper layer of soft snow is well bonded to this crust, there has been some weakness observed 1-2" above the crust layer but lacking potential to produce a slab avalanche. The new snow that fell overnight Thursday into Friday is what I would keep a close eye on today if I were to venture into the highest peaks above tree line in the Cabinets. It doesn't take a big slab to take you on a big ride in steep terrain, stability is good right now but don't get overconfident if you are seeking higher terrain in the alpine today.
