In sintesi

Almost a foot of new snow and gusty Southern winds have likely formed sensitive slabs in leeward terrain. Use caution and evaluate new snow stability on slopes steeper than 30 degrees---avoid wind loaded terrain and cornice edges.

If you are seeing cracks or hearing hollow sounds, collapses, or whumping noises in the snow change to another aspect or lower slope angle.

    South winds over the last 24 hours have been in the upper moderate to strong range moving snow and forming cornices on leeward aspects. Winds early Thursday morning are a bit lighter but are forecasted to be strong enough to continue to form slabs in leeward terrain through the day. 

    Look for clues like etching on the snow surface, dunes or pillows as to which direction the wind has been loading a slope as this can change due to local terrain influence and may be different than you might be thinking.

Avalanche Discussion

Wind loaded slopes are going to be suspect as far as stability is concerned but use caution and ease into terrain steep enough to slide (steeper than 30 degrees). Storm slab problems could form throughout the storm cycle as temps are going to fluctuate and could create enough of a short term weak layer and the new snow could become cohesive and become sensitive to the weight of a person. 

Bump up your safe travel protocols, keep your eyes on your partners, and begin with choosing terrain without consequence like gulleys, benches, and other areas that make a small slide a huge issue and you could be buried deeper. Evaluate the stability of the new snow before committing to big terrain.

Wednesday, the storm came in wet and heavy at times and through our travels we observed pretty good bonding of the first snowfall to the slicker surface that has sat around for 2 weeks, yet there could we some outliers or truly slick crusts on South through West aspects...overall we were left with a variety of snow surfaces from un and wind and a dry 2 week period and the lower snowpack is solid pencil hard.
