In sintesi

Recent extreme wind speeds have created isolated pockets of unstable snow at higher elevations. Additionally, variable surface conditions exist throughout the terrain. Avoid wind-loaded slopes and asses the snowpack while on the move today. Human Triggered avalanches are possible.

Yesterday, extreme wind speeds battered the snowpack and formed firm surface conditions above tree line. Pockets of unstable wind-blown snow remain in isolated terrain features.  Typical areas for wind slabs to form include gullies, leeward slopes, and just below ridge lines.  Watch, feel, and listen to the snowpack as you ski or ride today. Look for Cracking or whumfing, wind-drifted snow, recent avalanches, or abrupt changes in the snow's texture. These clues will help you to locate and avoid wind slabs in the backcountry today.

Avalanche Discussion

  • We have had a few observations come in regarding collapsed cornices. Keep a wide berth below them and be heads up while traveling atop ridgelines.
  • A thin 2- 3 cm thick melt-freeze crust has been present on South facing aspects above the tree line.
