Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Fresh unstable windslab will develop mainly on West through North to East aspects, initially above 800 metres and only above 1200 metres by the afternoon. Wet snow instabilities will develop during the day on the same aspects mainly between 800 and 1100 metres. Other aspects will be scoured with good stability. Fresh fragile cornices at higher elevations and wet thawing cornices lower down. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Strong South-South-East winds will become very strong during the day and veer to the South-West. Snow showers, heaviest in the morning, turning to rain below 1100 metres in the afternoon when the freezing level rises to around 1250 metres. Observed Weather Influences: It was a dry morning with a little very light snow in the afternoon. Gale force South-South-Easterly winds. The temperature was slowly rising with the freezing level around 600 metres at midday. ObservedSnowStability: Localised areas of moderately bonded windslab are present in wind sheltered locations mainly on West through North to North-East aspects above 800 metres. Slopes that have been exposed to the wind are scoured firm and stable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
