Avalanche Activity

Increasing glide-snow avalanches. Snowdrifts with ascending altitude.

Increasing slides and small-to-medium wet-snow avalanches are possible. Avoid zones below glide cracks. Fresh small snowdrifts can trigger a slab avalanches in steep shady terrain above the treeline behind discontinuities and in wind-loaded gullies and bowls. Frequency and size of danger zones increase with ascending altitude. In case of extended bright intervals, small loose-snow avalanches are possible. Activities in outlying terrain demand cautious route planning.

Snowpack Structure

Fresh snow and drifts from previous days have settled and increasingly consolidated. Weak layers lie embedded in the latest fresh snow and drifts, these are prone to triggering. The snowpack is moist-to-wet down to the ground up to high altitudes. Because ski areas are closed there is little information about snowpack layering at high altitudes. At low and intermediate altitudes the lower layers of the snowpack are often wet, which reinforces gliding.

Weather Forecast

Nocturnal hours: Clouds will disperse, skies clear or with only scattered clouds. Saturday daytime: Frequent sunshine, only few clouds. In the Silvretta the clouds will spread from the south. At 2000 m: -1 to +4 degrees. Moderate to strong southerly winds.

Tendency

Sunday will be very (foehn-generated) windy and mild, the zero-degree level will ascend to 3000 m. Sahara dust will create diffuse light conditions. Intermittently sunny. As temperatures continue to rise, danger of wet-snow avalanches will also rise during the course of each day. Backcountry skiing tours should begin early, end early.
