Avalanche Activity

In steep terrain there is a danger of falling on the hard snow surface.

Little snow fell yesterday along the border with France. The greatest danger remains slipping on hard snow, so it is advisable to carry snow knives and crampons for the steepest sections. The hard wind slabs are easy to recognise and can be released in isolated cases at their margins. This applies in particular in case of a large load, especially in extremely steep terrain. On very steep grassy slopes only isolated gliding avalanches are possible below approximately 2500 m. Areas with glide cracks are to be avoided.

Snowpack Structure

Above approximately 2300 m a lot of snow is lying. Snow depths vary greatly at high altitude, depending on the infuence of the wind. As a consequence of the strong to storm force wind, a crust formed on the surface. This applies above approximately 2600 m. The snowpack is well consolidated and its surface has a melt-freeze crust that is strong in many cases. This applies below approximately 2600 m.

Tendency

Saturday: Along the border with France, The avalanche danger will increase a little during the day.
