In sintesi

This morning we have very localized areas of MODERATE danger for wind slabs along the highest elevations. They'll be most prominent on north to east facing slopes above about 10,000' but not limited to these aspects. With increasing winds this afternoon, these drifts will become more sensitive and widespread.

The danger for wet avalanches will rise to MODERATE on all steep sunlit (east-south-west facing) slopes.

All other terrain has a mostly LOW danger.

    Sensitive, pockety and shallow wind drifts will be found along the highest elevation bands this morning...and with steadily increasing southwest winds today, these drifts will become larger and more widespread. As the drifts will be landing on weak recrystallized surface snow, it may be possible for some of these drifts to be quite "touchy", and even triggered at a distance on some slopes.

    TREND: Increasing

    The large, overhanging cornices become more tender in the spring and start to calve either naturally or with the additional weight of a person. Cornice-related fatalities account for about 5% of our accidents.

    Both natural and wet loose sluffs are expected with rapid warming and direct sun today. These will start on east, then south, then westerly facing aspects. Unseasonably cold temps and touch of wind kept the lid on the wet activity yesterday; today will offer no such reprieve. I expect the mid week storm snow (roughly 4-6") today to become fully saturated, unstable, and run on the early week sun crusts.

    Timing will be key today: Too early and you'll find slide-for-life conditions on the slick refrozen crusts; Too late and you'll put dramatic ruts in the wet snow on low angle slopes; on steeper slopes you are likely to trigger wet avalanches. Although these run more slowly than dry sluffs; the debris sets up like concrete.

On Friday, Rob Kincaid died in an avalanche just north of Palisades Reservoir near the ID/WY stateline. Rob was well known by many snowmobilers as an athlete for Arctic Cat and veteran of many snowmobile competitions. Article here. Preliminary report here.

More details should be available soon about these tragic events but initial reports are that both men were wearing avalanche transceivers that were not turned on. Grizzly Gulch Parking will be restricted to residents and homeowners only for April 4th and 5th to promote social distancing on busy days. Recreation visitors can access the trailhead but will need to park in the Albion parking Lot, the Wildcat parking lot, or along SR-210.

Recent Activity

Backcountry observers noted only some minor wet and dry loose snow sluffs in very steep terrain. As the southwest winds picked up in the afternoon, Mark White found hints of developing wind drifts along the south end of the Park City ridgeline.

Snow and Weather

Skies are clear.

Winds are from the west-southwest blowing 10-15mph with gusts to 25. The highest anemometers at 11,000' have wind speeds 25-35mph with gusts to 45.

Temperatures continue their upward march and are in the upper teens and low 20s.

Snow surface conditions range from soft settled powder at the mid and upper elevation northerly aspects...and something that resembles corn on the other aspects.

For today, we'll have clear skies with ridgetop temperatures rising to the mid-30s.

The southwest winds will gather steam over the course of the day with hourly averages reaching 25mph with gusts to 40mph by the afternoon.
