Avalanche Activity

North storm. Fresh and older wind slabs represent the main danger. Also shady slopes where weaknesses exist in the old snowpack are unfavourable.

Some snow will fall on the northern Alpine ridge. The strong wind will transport the new snow and, in some cases, old snow as well. The wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in some cases and above the tree line. In gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain and on wind-loaded slopes the likelihood of avalanches is higher. Weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on steep shady slopes. Weak layers in the old snowpack are difficult to recognise. Low and intermediate altitudes as well as wind-protected sunny slopes: The snowpack is largely stable and its surface has a crust. Especially at intermediate altitudes and on very steep slopes mostly small natural avalanches are possible as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation.

Snowpack Structure

The wind slabs are lying on unfavourable layers. Low and intermediate altitudes as well as wind-protected sunny slopes: The snowpack is largely stable and its surface has a crust.
