The avalanche hazard will increase Tuesday afternoon and night. Rising ridgeline winds should form fresh, shallow wind slabs below ridgelines and on lee slopes in higher terrain. Use caution when approaching steep slopes where you find freshly drifted snow.
Avalanche Discussion
Increasing SE winds on Tuesday should easily move around the 3-5" of lower density snow received Sunday and Sunday night in the Hurricane Ridge area. Other parts of the range will have received more recent snowfall. Feel for firm or hollow sounding snow as you travel higher in the terrain and change aspects. Watch for shooting cracks in the surface snow as a clear sign of instability. Use caution when approaching open slopes steeper than 35 degrees; with a variety of weak snow grains found over the mid-January firm crust, shallow slab avalanches may be easier to trigger than you expect.
If you're traveling before winds increase or in wind-sheltered terrain, you may trigger small loose snow avalanches on very steep or extreme terrain features. Small avalanches of any type can still cause you trouble when paired with terrain traps like cliff bands, thick trees, or exposed obstacles.
Below the surface snow, you will find a generally strong snowpack. Travel conditions have improved but underneath the recent snow you may encounter barely hidden rocks or trees, firm and slick slopes, and patches of bare ground.
2020-21 Forecast Schedule: Avalanche danger ratings will be issued for the Olympics every Friday through Sunday and during mid-week holidays. During the week when the Hurricane Ridge road is closed, forecast information will be updated daily to include expected conditions and relevant travel advice under the No Rating label.
During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials.
