Avalanche Activity

SC 10.03 Thaw conditions! Cornice collapse threatens slopes on W through N to E aspects above 900m. Avalanche hazard - Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: The surface layers of the snow will soften at all altitudes with surface instability possible on most aspects on the steepest of terrain. Greatest hazard will be encountered on West through North to East aspects above 900 metres where falling cornices will threaten the moderately bonded slopes below. Specific locations of heightened risk include gully lines and steep well defined corrie rims. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Forecast Weather Influences: Light precipitation throughout the period only falling as snow on the highest summits for a brief period during the evening. Thereafter, rain at all levels as the freezing level rises over the summits. Winds easing briefly overnight before increasing to become gale force Southerly during the day. A trace of snow above 900 metres during the morning with further precipitation arriving during the afternoon, falling as snow only on the highest summits. Storm force Southerly winds. Freezing level 1000 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Localised moderately bonded windslab is present on West through North to East aspects above 900 metres. Distribution is limited to the most wind sheltered locations such as steep, well defined gully tops, burn lines and corrie rims. Small cornices are present above these slopes.
