Avalanche Activity

New snow and wind slabs represent the main danger.

The small quantity of fresh snow as well as the mostly small wind slabs are lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack. New snow and wind slabs can sometimes be released, even by small loads in isolated cases. This applies especially on steep slopes. In the regions exposed to heavier precipitation the avalanche danger is a little higher. Avalanches can additionally in isolated cases be released in near-ground layers, in particular by large additional loads.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 10 to 20 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen in all altitude zones. The new snow and wind slabs of the last few days are lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack. Faceted weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack at intermediate and high altitudes. In particular in high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.
