In sintesi

It is not impossible to trigger a small wind slab avalanche today in areas where hard deposits sit over weaker snow. Travel may be difficult in places due to a variety of surface types. Localized assessment of steep terrain that favors drifting is never a bad idea.

We are on day 4 of a continued S SW wind event. Moderate to strong winds have, and continue to, create small wind slabs in isolated pockets of terrain near and above treeline. Blowing snow and cornice formation are active signs of potential wind slab formation. Hollow, stiff, textured snow is a sign you may have found the problem. Due to their isolated nature you may not see any warning signs until you are on a hard slab. Even small wind slab avalanches can have big consequences in extreme terrain. Fresh, thin soft slabs could form if we get a couple inches of new snow today. Localized assessment of conditions is always valuable to minimize risk.

Avalanche Discussion

After the extreme wind event Mar 2-5, there is little snow available for transport in fetches. However, we are observing that snow in start zones and other pockets of terrain is faceting overnight. SW winds are able to pick up this snow and deposit it around the slope as they funnel through and around terrain features. Where this blowing snow is deposited on weak surface snow, it is creating small pockets of wind slab. If we receive a few inches of snow from the storm in the Pacific North West, we will be searching for wind slabs amongst the fresh snow as well.

Wind chills are expected to be frigid at upper elevations. However, lower elevations can expect warm temperatures, sticky snow later in the day, and even small isolated pockets of roller balls and wet loose instabilities.
