In sintesi

The overall avalanche danger today on the Manti Skyline is at the low end of MODERATE.

Human triggered avalanches are not all that likely today.

Places where you could find trouble are in the upper elevations on steep slopes where wind has deposited snow forming drifts and slabs.

North through east facing slopes are the most suspect but look for drifts and slabs that have formed around terrain features on all aspects.

    There is plenty of weak faceted sugary snow in different layers through our snowpack. You'll find lots of hollow spots where you punch your boots, skis, or machines into this sugar. For the most part, all this loose snow isn't causing huge problems right now. It needs a new snow load to become really dangerous. That said, you can find trouble if you're looking for it. Here is what you want to watch out for today:

    Wind drifted snow. The wind formed numerous drifts and slabs in the higher terrain over the last few weeks. The majority of these are sitting on top of weak sugary snow. Most of these drifts and slabs will be stubborn today and won't crack out. A few may release if they are provoked. This was the case earlier this week where a snowmobiler triggered a sizeable wind slab and was killed as a result. MONTE CRISTO AVALANCHE FATALITY

Snow and Weather

Current Conditions: Unusually warm weather continues. Highs on Thursday were up around 40˚F in the higher terrain and cooled into the low 30s overnight. This was probably enough to freeze the snow surface and you'll most likely encounter melt/freeze crusts this morning. The wind died down for a while on Thursday and ramped back up again overnight with fairly strong speeds along the higher terrain. Riding conditions are poor.

Mountain Weather: It'll be the last day of the abnormally warm weather. Highs will again be up around 40˚F. It looks like it's going to be pretty breezy. Expect moderate to strong wind from the southwest. We'll see partly cloudy to mostly cloudy skies today with mid level cloud cover in and out through the day. A cold front moves through this evening bringing a short burst of snow that may add up to a few inches. Things clear out again on Saturday with temperatures in the 20s and light wind.
