In sintesi

Wind slabs are to be evaluated with care and prudence. As the day progresses as a consequence of warming during the day there will be an increase in the danger of moist avalanches. Distinct weak layers in the old snowpack necessitate defensive route selection.

Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs are to be evaluated with care and prudence. As the day progresses as a consequence of warming during the day there will be an increase in the danger of moist avalanches. Distinct weak layers in the old snowpack necessitate defensive route selection.

The wind will be moderate to strong at times in some localities. Especially adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls large surface-area wind slabs formed. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular on wind-loaded slopes of all aspects above approximately 1900 m and at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. The avalanche prone locations are easy to recognise. Weak layers in the old snowpack necessitate defensive route selection. In some places the avalanches can be triggered in deep layers of the snowpack and reach quite a large size. They can be released, even by a single winter sport participant. Whumpfing sounds and the formation of shooting cracks when stepping on the snowpack serve as an alarm sign. Experience and restraint are required. As the day progresses as a consequence of solar radiation there will be an increase in the danger of moist avalanches.

Snowpack Structure

In particular above approximately 1900 m clearly visible wind slabs formed. Towards its base, the snowpack is faceted and weak. Avalanches can be released in deeper layers also. Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise as the day progresses to moistening of the snowpack in particular on very steep sunny slopes below approximately 2300 m.
