Avalanche Activity

CM 10.03 Unstable windslab and cold induced weaknesses on all aspects above 900m. Avalanche Hazard Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: Overnight localised areas of unstable windslab will develop mainly on South to West aspects above 900 metres. During the day windslab will form on East to South aspects above 900 metres. This will mainly affect areas such as steep corrie headwalls, gully tops and the leeward side of ridge crests. Existing weaknesses on Northerly aspects will persist. In addition, continued cold temperatures will further develop weaknesses within the snowpack on all aspects. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Strong East-North-East winds backing and easing through North to West-North-Westerlies by Friday morning. Remaining dry and very cold with the ground frozen down to glen level. Observed Weather Influences: Moderate to fresh mainly Easterly winds. A dry, cold day freezing at all levels. ObservedSnowStability: Localised areas of unstable windslab are present, mainly on East through South to West aspects above 900 meters. Some re-distribution of snow was also observed developing on Northerly aspects. Areas most affected are steep corrie headwalls, gully tops and the leeward side of ridge crests. In addition, cold induced weakness are present on all aspects. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
