Avalanche Activity

Danger due to wet-snow/glide-snow avalanches. Heed drifts at high altitudes.

Up to high altitudes, increased loose-snow and wet-snow avalanches possible during the course of the day due to wetness, radiation and warmth. Glide-snow avalanches can trigger at any time of day or night and grow to larger size. Danger zones occur near ridges, behind discontinuities and in wind-loaded gullies and bowls, esp. on steep shady slopes the older drifts are often trigger-prone. Small-to-medium slab avalanches and also loose-snow avalanches can be triggered by large additional loading. In high alpine regioins the danger zones are more frequent.

Snowpack Structure

Mild weather is helping the snowpack to stabilize, including the drifts from Monday. Bonding deteriorates with ascending altitude. The snowpack was weakened by rain impact at low altitudes, wet down to the ground. A melt-freeze crust forms at night, often capable of beareing loads. Below 1500 m there is little snow on the ground.

Weather Forecast

Nocturnal hours: Scattered clouds to cloudless. Wednesday daytime: Tranquil and very mild weather, mostly sunsihne, plus degrees to nearely 3000 m. At 2000 m0 to 7 degrees. Light westerly winds.

Tendency

On Thursday, rainfall, snowfall above 1900 m in Rätikon and Silvretta, often hefty with brisk W/NW winds Danger of dry-snow avalanches will rise somewhat. Danger of wet-snow avalanches will rise in places where there is rain impact. Glide-snow avalanches can still be expected.
