Avalanche Summary

You can trigger a small avalanche in drifted snow at the highest elevations. If you see cracking in the new snow, that's a sign you could trigger an avalanche. The new snow might sluff off some steep slopes, but take care where it drifts into pillows directly below ridges and in gullies. Small slides in the new snow can be the trigger for larger avalanches. Slopes with exposed trigger points and variable snow cover are the most likely places to trigger a deeper avalanche. Look for wind-sheltered slopes or slopes less than about 35 degrees for safer riding.
